Young People and Mental Health - Tuning into Teens
1 in 4 young people will experience mental health issues and most of them will not seek help. There are many reasons why, although stigma plays a major role. Completing a Youth Mental Health First Aid course will help you to develop the skills to assist a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
You will learn to recognise and respond to a young person who may be experiencing common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, problematic substance use, panic attacks, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Less common mental health issues such as psychosis and eating disorders are also covered.
You’ll learn how to help someone to access the support they might need to manage their symptoms as part of their recovery journey, including school and community based supports.
You will also learn how to actively reduce stigma in your school community by responding appropriately to myths and misconceptions about mental illness.

In addition to YMHFA, Tuning into Teens is an evidence-based parenting program that provides parents with skills and strategies to help with every day parenting challenges. It focuses on managing emotions and reducing conflict, all factors that have been found to reduce the risk of mental health and substance use problems.
